Human Factors in Design

18 07 2008

Every product responds to us with specific elements which are interfaced when using the products.

The prdoucts talks with us with these interfaces.

The steps for designing these interfaces
1. Observe
2. Document actions
3. Analyse
4. Identify problem area / Areas of Improvement
5. Find solutions
6. Test with varied cross section of users

Observe – see the user, using the product in different scenarios, personally experience using the product or putting yourself in the end user situation. – Observing is internalisation

Documentation – step by step documentation of the actions involved in using the product. Photographs is the ideal process of documentation – Visual reference creation.

Analyse – Write down and explore and analyse why these actions are done in a certain way to operate or use the product – Question the obvious

Identify problem areas – Find scope for improvement in all possible areas, these become the design problem statement – Design is in the details

Find solutions – creative ideas can be generated to solve these ergonomic and user interface problems – innovate ideas

Test – Make models / Rigs and test the idea with a wide variance of endusers and based on feedback refine the ideas and demostrate final model.
